Word count to page count calculator

An 80,000-word manuscript comes to about 270 pages in a 6 × 9 inch paperback and about 390 pages in a 5 × 8 inch trim, at 12 point type with normal line spacing. Enter your word count, trim size and font below for an estimate, rounded up to a multiple of 4 pages as printers require.

About 272 pages (likely range 244 to 300)

306 words per page on a 6 × 9 in (US trade) page, so about 262 pages of text plus 8 pages of front and back matter, rounded up to a multiple of 4 because books are printed in multiples of 4 pages.

How it works

The estimate models one page: 0.75 in margins on every side, an average character width of half the font size, 6 characters per word (5 letters and a space) and the line spacing you choose. Words per page times pages equals your word count; 8 pages of front and back matter are added and the total is rounded up to a multiple of 4.

It is an estimate. Chapter openings, headings, images, indents and a different font change the real count, so use it for planning and the final figure from your formatted file.

Questions

How many words are on a book page?
It depends on the trim size, font size and spacing. With 0.75 inch margins and 12 point type at normal spacing, a 5 × 8 inch page holds about 200 words and a 6 × 9 inch page about 300.
Why does the page count have to be a multiple of 4?
Pages are printed on sheets that are folded, so a book is printed in multiples of 4 pages. The estimate rounds up to the next multiple of 4.
How accurate is it?
It is a planning estimate within roughly 10%. The page count of the finished, formatted file is the figure to use for pricing and for the spine width.
