How to print a book in four steps

Custom book printing: what you can choose
Every option below is in the calculator, so the price you see is for the book you actually want.
- Trim size. 19 sizes, from Pocket Book (4.25 x 6.87 in) to Large Square (10 x 10 in), including US Trade 6 x 9 in, Digest 5.5 x 8.5 in and US Letter 8.5 x 11 in.
- Cover style. Paperback (perfect bound), paperback printed on the inside covers, or hardcover.
- Cover finish. Gloss, matte or soft touch.
- Interior. Black and white, or full colour.
- Paper. 60lb Natural (cream), 60lb Opaque, 80lb Gloss, 80lb Satin, 100lb Gloss and 100lb Matte.
- Binding. Perfect binding for paperbacks. Hardcovers are case-bound with an adhesive case wrap, with an optional printed dust jacket. Smyth-sewn binding is not offered at the moment.
- Page count. From 24 pages, in multiples of 4. The maximum depends on the paper and trim: up to 840 pages on most combinations, and less on the 100lb papers and landscape sizes. The calculator shows the range for your choices.
- Quantity. From 1 copy to 10,000. Instant prices cover up to 1,000 copies; larger runs are quoted.

Most novels and memoirs suit 5.5 x 8.5 in; most non-fiction suits 6 x 9 in; workbooks and manuals suit 8.5 x 11 in. A size outside this list may not be possible, so ask us before you lay out your book. See book trim sizes for more detail.
What decides your printing price
- Page count. More pages means more paper and more printing.
- Trim size. A larger page uses more paper per copy.
- Cover and binding. Hardcover adds the boards and case-making, which raises the price per copy but gives a much more durable book.
- Interior colour. Full colour costs more per page than black and white, so it is usually kept for picture books, cookbooks and photo books.
- Quantity. Setup costs are shared across the run, so the price per copy falls as you order more.
How long printing takes
Production time depends on how many copies you print and which paper you choose. These are production days for a paperback book, before shipping and our handling time.

Hardcover on 80lb Satin or 100lb Matte takes 3 to 5 weeks. Hardcover on the other papers is typically 4 days at 100 to 500 copies. We confirm your production time in your quote.

Printing is priced per copy and depends on page count, trim size, cover style, paper, whether the interior is black and white or colour, and how many copies you order. How much does a 300 page book cost to print?
A 300-page paperback (6 x 9 in, black-and-white interior, 60lb natural paper, gloss cover) costs $103.61 for a single copy, $14.01 a copy at 25 copies, $11.50 a copy at 100 copies and $10.49 a copy at 500 copies. How much does a 200 page book cost to print?
A 200-page paperback (6 x 9 in, black-and-white interior, 60lb natural paper, gloss cover) costs $98.15 for a single copy, $13.92 a copy at 25 copies, $8.70 a copy at 100 copies and $7.79 a copy at 500 copies. What is the best company to print a book?
It depends on how many copies you need and where they will be sold. Print-on-demand services such as Amazon KDP and IngramSpark print one copy per order for books sold online, with no stock to hold. A printing service such as Harmony prints copies you own, from a single copy to 10,000, in paperback or hardcover, and shows the price before you order. For a very large run, ask for a quote.
Does Amazon offer book printing services?
Yes. Amazon KDP prints paperbacks and hardcovers on demand for books you publish through KDP, and you can order printed author copies at the printing cost. KDP prints for sale on Amazon, so if you want copies you control, such as stock for events, bookstores or reviewers, or a size or finish KDP does not offer, use a printing service. Harmony prints from one copy and shows the price in the calculator.
Can I print just one copy of my book?
Yes. You can order a single copy, for example a proof to check before a larger run, or a handful of copies for family and reviewers. The price per copy is highest at small quantities and falls as the run grows.
What does custom book printing include?
You choose the trim size (19 sizes), cover style (paperback, paperback printed on the inside, or hardcover), cover finish (gloss, matte or soft touch), interior (black and white or full colour), paper stock (six options), page count and quantity. Hardcovers can have a printed dust jacket. Smyth-sewn binding is not offered at the moment.
Can I print a book in a custom size?
We print in a range of standard trade and square trim sizes. If you need a size that is not on our list, ask us and we will tell you whether it can be done.
How long does book printing take?
Production time depends on the quantity and the paper. For a typical paperback it runs from about 2 days for a single copy to about 9 days for 10,000 copies on standard paper, and longer on satin or matte stock. Hardcover on 80lb Satin or 100lb Matte takes 3 to 5 weeks. These are production days only; shipping and our handling time are extra, and we confirm your production time in your quote.
Does my page count need to be a multiple of four?
Yes. Books are printed in multiples of 4 pages. If your interior is not a multiple of 4, the calculator rounds it up to the next multiple and tells you, for example 350 pages is printed as 352. Your interior file should have the same number of pages as you order.
Do you deliver across the USA?
Yes. Choose Economy, 2nd Day or Next Day delivery in the calculator and it shows the shipping for your ZIP code alongside the printing price. Delivery outside the United States is quoted individually.
Can I supply my own print-ready files?
Yes. Send a print-ready interior PDF at your trim size and a cover file with the right spine width for your page count and paper. If your files are not ready, we can format the interior, design the cover and supply an ISBN.
