Copyright Page for KDP and Kindle Ebooks

Amazon KDP changes two details on a copyright page. If you take KDP's free ISBN for a paperback or hardcover, the imprint shows as "Independently published", and a Kindle ebook does not need an ISBN at all. The generator below starts with those defaults, the template has a print version and an ebook version, and the examples show what KDP authors put on each.

Fill in what you have; leave the rest blank. Nothing you type leaves this page.

What KDP's free ISBN means for the page

KDP offers a free ISBN for paperbacks and hardcovers. According to KDP, if you use it the imprint appears as "Independently published", and each format needs its own ISBN. If you want your own imprint name to show, you need ISBNs you bought yourself.

The ISBN KDP assigns is shown on the paperback or hardcover setup page; copy it onto the copyright page before you upload the final interior file.

The ebook version

KDP says an ISBN is optional for ebooks; Amazon gives the Kindle edition its own ASIN, which you do not need to print. Keep the copyright page short in the ebook, and do not leave the print ISBN on the ebook page, since it identifies a different format.

Checklist before you upload

  • The ISBN on the page matches the ISBN on the format's setup page.
  • The imprint matches: "Independently published" with a KDP ISBN, your imprint with your own.
  • The year is the year of this edition's first publication.
  • The ebook file has its own copyright page without the print ISBN.

Questions

Can I use one ISBN for my paperback and hardcover?

No. KDP says each format needs its own ISBN.

Can I use KDP's free ISBN with another printer?

KDP's free ISBNs are for books distributed through KDP. For printing elsewhere, buy your own.

Do I print the ASIN?

No. The ASIN is Amazon's own identifier; readers never need it on the page.
