Self-Publishing Services: What Each One Costs in 2026

Self-publishing is not one service. It is between four and eight, and companies sell them either individually or as a package. A complete set for a typical novel costs roughly $3,200 to $7,800 if you hire each professional separately, or from $699 to $9,999 in a published package.

That gap is not a discount. Packages cost less because the company buys editing, design and printing at trade rates. This page explains what each service does, what it costs in the US in 2026, and how to tell whether you need it.

What services do I actually need?

Between four and eight, depending on the book. A novel needs editing, layout, a cover and an ISBN. A photography book also needs colour print management. A short business booklet may need none of the developmental work.

These are the services in the order a book passes through them:

  1. Manuscript assessment — a structural read before detailed editing begins
  2. Developmental editing — restructuring, pacing, completeness
  3. Copyediting — grammar, consistency, clarity, continuity
  4. Proofreading — the final pass, done on typeset pages
  5. Interior layout — page design, type, margins, chapter openings
  6. Cover design — front, spine and back in print-ready files
  7. ISBN and barcode — the identifier and back-cover barcode
  8. eBook conversion and distribution — EPUB files and retail placement

What does each self-publishing service cost?

Here are the 2026 US market ranges for each service, with what our own packages include for comparison.

Self-publishing service costs in the US, 2026
ServiceTypical US costIn our packages?
Manuscript assessment$400 to $1,200Yes
Developmental editing$2,000 to $7,000Higher tiers
Copyediting$0.01 to $0.05 per wordYes
Proofreading1.0 to 1.5 cents per wordYes
Interior layout$300 to $1,500Yes
Cover design$300 to $2,500Yes
ISBN and barcode$125 (Bowker, US)Yes
eBook conversion$99 to $300Yes

Editing is the largest single cost. For an 80,000-word novel, copyediting alone runs $1,600 to $2,160 at the rate the Editorial Freelancers Association publishes for 2026.

Why is a package cheaper than hiring separately?

Because the publisher buys at trade rates. When you hire an editor, a designer and a formatter separately, you pay retail rates for each. A publisher doing the same work in volume pays less for each stage and bundles the saving.

Adding the individual services for a typical 200-page novel:

What a complete set of services costs à la carte
ServiceÀ la carte cost
Copyediting (80,000 words)$1,600 to $2,160
Proofreading$800 to $1,200
Interior layout$300 to $1,500
Cover design$300 to $2,500
ISBN$125
eBook conversion$99 to $300
Total~$3,200 to $7,800

Add $2,000 to $7,000 if the manuscript needs developmental editing. Published packages covering the same ground run from $699 to $9,999.

Is editing included in a self-publishing package?

Often it is not, and that matters more than any other question about a package. Editing is the largest single cost in producing a book, so a package that excludes it is not the price of a published book.

Check three things before buying. Which editing pass is included — proofreading, copyediting or developmental editing, because they are different jobs at different prices. Whether it is capped by word count. And what the company charges for corrections after you approve the proof, which is commonly $50 plus $2 per edit.

One published package we checked lists at $2,190 and excludes editing. Add copyediting at EFA rates and the real figure is $3,800 to $4,400. The headline price tells you what is bundled, not what the book will cost.

Do I need every service?

No. The honest answer depends on your manuscript and your budget.

Always needed: copyediting and proofreading, and a cover that looks like it belongs beside the bestselling books in your category. Readers forgive a slow chapter; they do not forgive errors on every page or a cover that reads as amateur.

Needed if unsure about structure: developmental editing. Fixing structure after typesetting means redoing the typesetting.

Needed for print: interior layout and an ISBN. Amazon assigns a free one for Amazon-only publishing, but it cannot be used with any other retailer.

Optional: eBook conversion, if you intend to publish only in print.

If budget is limited, spend it on copyediting and the cover before anything else. Those two affect sales more than the rest combined.

FAQ

How much do self-publishing services cost?

Individual services run from $99 for eBook conversion to $7,000 for a full developmental edit. A complete set for a typical novel — copyediting, proofreading, layout, cover, ISBN and eBook — runs roughly $3,200 to $7,800 à la carte, or from $699 to $9,999 in a package depending on what is included.

What is the most important self-publishing service?

Editing and cover design, in that order. Editing determines whether readers finish the book; the cover determines whether they start it. Everything else affects production quality rather than sales.

Can I self-publish without hiring an editor?

Yes, and many authors do. Self-edited books carry more errors and generally sell fewer copies than professionally edited ones. If budget is limited, spend it on copyediting before any other service.

Do I need an ISBN to self-publish?

For Amazon-only publishing, no — KDP provides a free one. To sell through bookshops, libraries or any other retailer you need your own, which costs $125 from Bowker in the US, or $295 for ten.

What is the difference between copyediting and proofreading?

Copyediting corrects the manuscript: grammar, consistency, clarity. Proofreading checks the typeset pages after layout. They are separate passes, and they must happen in that order — proofreading a manuscript and then relaying the pages undoes the proofread.

How long do self-publishing services take?

A full sequence — editing, design, layout, proof and print — typically takes six to eight weeks. Developmental editing and illustration-heavy books take longer. Printing time depends on quantity.
