How to Publish a Textbook

The short answer

A textbook is a book built to teach, with chapters, exercises and often figures and an index. To publish one, plan the structure and the edition, clear permissions for every figure, lay out the pages carefully, get an ISBN for each edition and format, then print, often at 7x9 inches or larger.

What makes a textbook different from other books?

A textbook is a reference as well as a read. It needs a clear structure, consistent headings, numbered figures and tables, end-of-chapter exercises and usually an index, so a student can find a topic quickly.

It is also revised. Many textbooks go through editions, and a new edition normally gets its own ISBN, so plan for how you will track and label them.

How to publish a textbook, step by step

  1. Define the course and the reader. A textbook for one course is easier to adopt than a general text.
  2. Outline chapters with learning aims, exercises and answer keys before you write them out in full.
  3. Clear every figure, table, photograph and long quotation: permission, or a licence, or your own original work. Keep a permissions log.
  4. Edit for accuracy and consistency, then have a subject expert review the technical content.
  5. Lay out the interior in a layout tool with consistent styles for headings, captions, boxed text and exercises. Add running heads and page numbers.
  6. Build the index and table of contents last, when the page numbers are final.
  7. Get an ISBN for each format and each edition. A new edition is treated as a new product by the ISBN agency.
  8. Order a proof, check figures and page breaks, then print. A black-and-white interior keeps the cost per copy down.

Editions, permissions and accessibility

Each edition needs its own ISBN (the ISBN standard), so keep the same title but number the edition on the title page. For figures you did not make, permission is the rule, not the exception: a permissions log saves months at the next edition.

If the book will be used in schools or colleges, ask what format and accessibility requirements the institution has. Many ask for an accessible digital edition alongside the print edition.

What does it cost to print a textbook?

Textbooks carry tables, figures and exercises, so they print on a larger page than a novel. Bright white paper keeps diagrams and small type sharp.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a typical textbook?

Length depends on the course. Many college texts run 300 to 600 pages. Print pricing depends heavily on page count, so price your real length with the calculator.

What trim size suits a textbook?

7x9, 7x10 and 8.5x11 inches are common because they give room for tables and figures. Your layout decides the size, so decide it before you format.

Do I need an index?

Not by law, but students and instructors look for one. A reference-style text without an index is harder to use.
