How to Publish a Poetry Book
The short answer
A poetry book is a curated, ordered collection of poems, usually short and often 60 to 100 pages. To publish one, choose and order the poems, design pages that give each poem room, get an ISBN and print, commonly as a small 5.5x8.5 paperback.

What makes a poetry book different from other books?
A poetry collection is judged as a whole: the order of the poems, the spacing between them and the white space on the page all carry meaning. Most collections are short, so the page count is low and every page is visible.
Layout is part of the writing. A poem that runs onto a second page, or a line broken in the wrong place by software, changes how it reads.
How to publish a poetry book, step by step
- Choose the poems and cut hard. A tight collection of 40 to 60 poems is easier to read and to print than a long one.
- Order them. Group by theme, tone or time, and decide where the strongest poems sit: usually the opening and the close.
- Check where each poem has appeared before. If a magazine or anthology published a poem first, check the rights it holds before you reprint it.
- Edit and proofread. Poetry still needs a fresh pair of eyes for typos, line breaks and consistent punctuation.
- Design the interior so no poem is split across pages where you can avoid it, with margins wide enough to hold the longest line.
- Design the cover. A poetry cover is often typographic or a single image, and the title does most of the work.
- Get an ISBN, order a proof, then print. Short books of 79 pages or more have enough spine for text, according to Amazon KDP's cover guidance.
Quoting and reprinting other poets
Poems are protected by copyright from the moment they are written down. If you quote a poem by someone else, even a few lines in an epigraph, check whether you need permission from the poet or publisher, and credit the source. Your own poems that appeared in magazines are usually yours to reprint, but check each publication's terms.
What does it cost to print a poetry book?
Poetry books are short and the page matters, so a small trim with generous margins is the usual choice. At around 80 pages the spine is wide enough for a title.

Frequently asked questions
How many pages should a poetry book have?
Many collections run 60 to 100 pages. Printing needs a multiple of 4 pages, so the printer rounds your page count up.
Do poetry books need an ISBN?
If you want to sell the book through bookshops, libraries or online retailers, yes: each format needs its own ISBN. For copies you hand out yourself, you do not.
Is poetry hard to sell?
Poetry sells in small numbers, so many poets print short runs and sell at readings and events. Short-run printing lets you print 100 copies rather than 1,000.
