How to Publish a Journal Book
The short answer
A journal book is a printed notebook or guided journal: lined pages, prompts, trackers or planner pages for the reader to fill in. To publish one, design a consistent interior, create a cover, get an ISBN if you will sell it through retailers, then print, commonly as a 6x9 paperback.

What makes a journal different from other books?
A journal is a low-content or no-content book: the reader writes in it. The value is in the design (the layout, the prompts, the paper and the cover) rather than in the words, so the interior template matters most.
Guided journals add prompts, quotes or short teaching pages. A guided journal that teaches something is closer to a workbook, and can carry a higher price than a blank notebook.
How to publish a journal, step by step
- Decide the type: lined notebook, guided journal, gratitude or habit tracker, planner or sketchbook. Pick one audience.
- Design the interior page: line spacing, margins, header, page numbers. Leave enough margin on the binding side so writing does not run into the spine.
- Write the prompts, quotes or teaching pages if the journal is guided, and edit them as carefully as any other text.
- Choose a size and a page count that suits how it is used: a pocket journal and a desk planner are different books.
- Design the cover and the spine. Matte and soft-touch finishes feel good in the hand and suit journals.
- Check each retailer's rules for low-content books before you list one, and get an ISBN for each format if you sell through retailers.
- Order a proof, write in it yourself, then print. Check that the pages take ink and that the book opens flat.
Selling a journal
A journal sells on its cover and its niche, so a clear audience (for example, a journal for new parents or for gratitude practice) sells better than a general one. For gifts and events, a short print run lowers the cost per copy.
What does it cost to print a journal?
6x9 is a comfortable writing size and fits a bag. A black-and-white interior keeps the price per copy low, and bright white paper takes ink well.

Can I print just a few copies of a journal?
Yes. The printing calculator prices from a single copy, and short runs of 25 to 100 are common for gifts, workshops and events.
