How to Publish a Business Book
The short answer
A business book gives readers a practical idea, method or story they can use at work. To publish one, define the reader and the promise, write and edit to that promise, design a clean cover and interior, get an ISBN and print, usually as a 6x9 paperback.

What makes a business book different from other books?
A business book sells on a promise to a specific reader: a manager, a founder, a salesperson. The title and subtitle say who it is for and what they will be able to do after reading it.
Many business authors write to build credibility, win speaking and consulting work, or support a company. That affects how many copies you print and how you give them away as well as sell them.
How to publish a business book, step by step
- Write the promise in one sentence: who the book is for and what changes for them.
- Outline chapters around the reader's problem. Each chapter should end with something the reader can do.
- Check every claim, statistic and quotation. Cite the source, and ask permission before reprinting a chart or a long passage.
- Edit for structure first, then for sentences. A developmental editor will ask whether each chapter earns its place.
- Design the cover and interior. Use clear headings, short paragraphs, and callout boxes or diagrams for frameworks.
- Get an ISBN for each format you will sell. Consider a hardcover for gifting and an eBook for convenience.
- Order proofs, then print. If you will give copies to clients and speaking audiences, price a run of 100 to 500 and compare the cost per copy.
- Plan how the book works for your business: a landing page, a sample chapter and a way to collect reader emails.
Names, claims and permissions
If you name companies or people, check that you describe them accurately and have permission for any quoted material, logo or copyrighted chart. If the book makes performance or income claims, keep the evidence behind them.
What does it cost to print a business book?
6x9 is the standard trade size for business and self-help books, and white paper suits charts and tables.

Frequently asked questions
How long should a business book be?
Many business books run 150 to 250 pages. A shorter, focused book is easier to finish and to read, and costs less to print.
Should I print copies or use print on demand?
If you will hand copies to clients, event audiences or a team, a short print run lowers the cost per copy. For bookshop and online orders, print on demand avoids holding stock.
Do I need an ISBN?
If you sell through retailers or libraries, yes, one per format. For copies you give away, you do not strictly need one, but a book with an ISBN looks and searches like a book.
