The distinction that decides it
Ask yourself one question: do I have a finished, print-ready interior and cover?
If yes — IngramSpark is a strong choice for printing and distribution, particularly if bookshop and library reach matters. You may not need us at all.
If no — the file has to be produced before any platform can print it. That means cover design, interior typesetting, and in most cases an ISBN and barcode. That is the work we do, and it is not something a distribution platform can do for you.
What a print-ready file actually requires
"Print-ready" is a specific standard, not a general description. Before any printer will accept a book, the files need:
- Interior and cover at the correct trim size, with bleed where artwork runs to the edge
- Fonts embedded or outlined, so nothing substitutes at the press
- CMYK colour throughout, not RGB — including small decorative elements
- Resolution sufficient for print, generally 300DPI at final size
- A barcode block on the back cover if the book carries an ISBN — pure black on white, with a clear quiet zone
- Spine width calculated from the actual page count, paper stock and trim
If your files do not meet that list, the platform will reject them — and the fixes are not cosmetic. That is the gap we fill.

Is IngramSpark cheaper than Harmony Publishing?
IngramSpark charges for setup and printing and does not include editing, cover design or formatting, so its quotes look lower because less is included. The comparison only works if you add the cost of the services you would need to arrange elsewhere. If you already have professionally finished files, IngramSpark can be the cheaper route for distribution alone.
Can I use both?
Yes, and many authors do. An ISBN is non-exclusive, so a book produced with us can be distributed through IngramSpark, or produced and printed with us and listed through whichever channels you choose. There is no conflict.
Do I need a finished print-ready file for IngramSpark?
Yes. IngramSpark is a print and distribution platform, so the interior and cover must arrive production-ready — correct trim, bleed, embedded fonts, CMYK colour and a barcode block if the book carries an ISBN. If you need those files produced, that is the part we do.
Which gives me better bookstore reach?
IngramSpark is built for wholesale and retail reach, including bookshops and libraries, and that is its main advantage. We set up worldwide distribution in your name as part of the package. If bookstore placement is the priority and your files are ready, IngramSpark is the specialist tool.
Who owns my ISBN if I use a platform?
Whoever is named as publisher when the ISBN is registered. If you register your own ISBN, you are the publisher of record regardless of who prints or distributes the book. With us, the ISBN is registered in your name or your own imprint.
