Children's Book Dedication Examples

Picture books have less room than novels, so the dedication often shares a page with the copyright notice or sits on the half-title, and children may read it aloud. That changes what works: shorter lines, a child's name, sometimes a joke. Use the generator for drafts in a playful or warm voice, take the picture-book template, and read the examples below, written for books children actually hold.

Dedication generator

Choose who the book is for and the tone. Nothing you type leaves this page.

  • For [name], who promised to read this before bedtime (and then fell asleep on page two).

  • To [name], chief tester of every silly voice in this book.

  • For [name]: yes, you can stay up and finish it.

Where it goes in a picture book

A 32-page picture book is printed in exact multiples of pages, and every page is planned before the illustrations start. The dedication usually shares the copyright page or goes on the title page spread rather than taking a page of its own. Decide where it goes with your illustrator early, because moving it later can shift the whole layout.

In chapter books and middle-grade novels there is room for a separate dedication page, laid out as in an adult book.

What works for young readers

  • Use the child's first name or a nickname they will recognise.
  • Point to something in the book: a character, a page, a joke only they will get.
  • Keep it under 15 words if a child will read it aloud.
  • If the book is for all children, say who: new big sisters, kids who are scared of the dark.
  • Avoid inside jokes that need a grown-up to explain them.

Author and illustrator dedications

When an author and an illustrator share a book, each often writes a line: "For Kemi, from the writer" and "For my mother, from the artist". Agree the order and the style together so the two lines sit well on the same page.

Questions

Does the illustrator get a dedication too?

It is common in picture books for both the author and the illustrator to dedicate the book, each with one line.

Should I use my child's full name?

A first name or nickname is safer for a book anyone can buy. Many parents prefer not to print a child's full name.

Can the dedication be illustrated?

Yes. A small spot illustration next to the dedication is common in picture books; plan it with the illustrator as part of the page count.
